In the early nineties in Bristol, a dark melodious sound was emerging from the DJs. One band that further developed this sound was Portishead. They layered samples with their own instrumentation and recorded it with old reel-to-reel tape. In this song they use Hayes' sample:

Another Bristolian, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, used the same sample on a song that came out right around the same time. The song is off his record Maxinequaye, named after his mother Maxine Quaye who committed suicide in front of him when he was four. Tricky claims that she gave him her soul and that it is her singing on the record. One critic described his pathos as, "one of the blackest psyches ever documented on tape - a tangle of sex and death, bad karma and ghetto voodoo, sound tracked by darkly sticky hip hop blues."Hell Is Around the Corner |
