Al Green's 1973 Livin' For You is a subtle album. It doesn't include any of his well known hits. The songs are mostly slow soul ballads. But the more you listen to this record, the more you hear. Every song is nuanced and tender. And together they form a masterpiece of love.

Shortly after this record was released, one of Al Green's lovers committed suicide. The tragedy inspired him to give up singing secular music and commit himself to his spiritual work with the Baptist Church.
