Album Review: Shaolin Soul

This album is a compilation of soul songs sampled by the Wu Tang Clan, essentially a guided tour through the crates of the RZA. For a Wu Tang fan it is very exciting to hear these familiar riffs in their original context. My only complaint is that my edition of Shaolin Soul does not provide any information about where the samples occur in the Wu Tang’s catalog. Most seem to be songs that are sampled in 36 Chambers, which is just fine with me. There are a few different albums like this floating around. My double LP is released by Delabel and seems to have been printed in France.

Ann Peebles’ Trouble, Heartaches, and Sadness, is the first song on the compilation. The beat from this one is flipped on Shadowboxin’ from the GZA’s breakout Liquid Swords.

The Charmels’ I’ll Never Grow Old (As Long as I've Got You) starts with the famous piano riff which provides the hook for Wu Tang’s Cash Rules Everything Around Me (36 Chambers).

Wendy Rene’s After the Laughter (Comes Tears) is sampled on Tears (36 Chambers).
